Yes Mike I'm from Chicago (actually Oak Park). The Dem convention in '68 was something else... the city over-run with hippies and cops on a rampage against anyone with long hair, or a camera (including press photoghraphers). I got lucky that nominating night at the convention... I was literally in the front row about 30 yards from the line of cops, and about a minute before they charged I could sense something was about to happen and moved back and onto the sidewalk. They were perfectly coordinated in their attack... at the same time they charged on Michigan they pulled up busses of cops at the end of all the streets leading off Michigan and charged from the other direction. All swinging billy clubs and splitting heads, people going down and blood all over. It was a slaughter. Don't know how I managed to make it through unscathed. That year the movement candidate was Eugene McCarty, the only peace candidate. Ever since I've been suspect of "movement" candidates... they just don't win. Maybe this time will be different.
