There has always been a religious element. Texas was primarily rural until recently and churches were an important social component.

But, it wasn't considered polite to push your religion until The Boom and the rise of the born agains. Whether or not one caused the other is hard to say, but they certainly happened about the same time.

Many of Kinky's political ads parodied this.
