The talent gap is extremely wide at this age. You have the same issues with playing zone as well. Out of the 10 boys I have, 5 or 6 boys who get it and see them playing down the line if they stick with it. They're only 8 years old and want them to have fun and hopefully they'll end up learn something from the experience. I try hard to encourage good defense, passing and being a good team mate in general. I praise them just as much for good D, a good pick which frees a team mate, and an assist just as much or more than a made basket. It's been a blast to date, I must say. Even, the parents have been good to deal and have been cooperative (at least thus far)
