Your belief is a common misapprehension in this space. Before they blew up (see Aug 9th news story on BNP Paribas freezing three funds), the pricing models relied heavily on credit ratings for their pricing determinations.

As for the monthly exercise, it's been done and the ratings companies had similar data. It didn't help for reasons that are somewhat complex.
