I'm pretty sure that you know more than me on this issue, especially given that I haven't really been keeping up with the markets too much for the last 8 years until 3 weeks ago. (I did work at a company that is very cutting edge re valuing financial instruments, although I didn't really get much exposure to the asset side... or the life products.) Bob Rodriguez backs up your comments on opacity in Fortune (a magazine that I hate, I'm just remembering). The Economist noted that we have issues with subprimes having an unknown degree of problems but also having no historical context with which to estimate just how big the problem could be.
