Charge them interest as they would charge you if you didn't pay. I paid just shy of 10K in property taxes this year in December so there is 0 chance that I would double pay:(

First call the County Exec's office, assuming it is County Taxes. Find out who makes the decision as to when to send the check back. Ask how much interest you will have coming. Tell them you will notify the papers if you don't have proper resolution. See what happens. The worst that can happen is you won't get the check until April. The best is that you will receive the check within the week....

Go as high as you can as far as what office to talk to....their Assistant usually knows who can take care of it, to get you off their backs.... At least that's my experience.
