Don't think about it in a literal way. I think the meaning is that many people tend to vote for people they imagine, perhaps on a subconscious level, they can identify with. It is the "he's one of us" feeling. I don't think there is anything new about it.

I think it was Huckabee that said something like Romney reminds people of their boss at work, he does not remind them of their co-worker.

This might all be incorrect and instead Romney's unlikability may be due to other factors. Regardless, being unlikable to large numbers of people is a shortcoming in the political world. In the business world it matters much less. Romney does well in the business world.
