It saves many people!

Indeed, but had intended consequences that prolonged the recovery. Surely you don't dispute the problem of absent fathers and the role welfare policy played in that.

There is still massive racism.

I don't believe that. Perhaps it's just my proximity to Washington, DC, but I haven't seen or heard of significant racism in a couple of decades. Yes, I know it still exists and that incidents still happen, but nothing remotely like it once was.

I seldon hear conservatives talk about corporate welfare.

One posted to that effect this very afternoon.

Don't misunderstand. I was not advocating corporate welfare nor was I criticizing the notion of welfare for those parents who lose jobs. I merely referenced an unfortunate side effect of welfare regulations as practiced for many years.

Koan,

I worked in the social services field in the 60s and 70s, and some of the policies were very destructive for families. They discouraged the formation of a family unit by denying benefits when there was a man in the home, making it much more "profitable" for a woman to be unmarried, not working, and on ADC, Medicaid, subsidized housing, and Food Stamps, than for a couple to stay together and try to scrape by. The programs rendered the male not just superfluous, but an obstruction.

As much as welfare programs can help, they also have had unintended and longterm negative consequences for certain groups.
