If he was a democrat, no one would even notice. They would simply consider him a conservative democrat. There are some conservatives out there, but they didn't run (other than Thompson). Below is a list of some of the things I identify as conservative. I don't want to debate each and every item because these are very general views. We could get into a discussion on each, but let's no go there. First, Not all republicans are conservative. Not all republicans that are conservative are on the same page on all these items. Some republicans that are conservative have been willing to bend the ideals to accomplish some of the their goals because of the political realities. Some republicans that are considered conservative by the mainstream are so off the page in some areas they are actually something else - even though they are in favor of some of the above (the neo cons for example). 1. The goal should be to shrink government and look for private sector solutions to problems instead 2. Lower taxes (especially on capital) and lower government spending are a recipe for faster economic growth and faster growth in standards of living for all 3. Pro business 4. Courts should follow the constitution and not legislate 5. The traditional moral values most often associated with Judeo/Christian teachings tend to produce the best results for individuals and society as a whole 6. Pro strong military 7. Pro sound money 8. Pro free trade 9. Pro non intervention overseas Now within that, there are a wide variety of views, some moderate and some extreme. For example, The religious conservatives would probably legislate their values because they believe they come from God, but other conservatives (like me) think that stats and common sense tell you everything you need to know. We believe there's nothing wrong with encouraging good behavior and discouraging poor behavior even if some of it offends people that believe we shouldn't make judgements like that. A fiscal conservative like Jack Kemp might admire some of the good points about the gold standard, but a libertarian (like me) wants to dismantle the Fed totally and thinks it's practically an evil institution.
