Right on.
How old are your kids?

In Milano/Torino you may consider spending some time down around Alba/Neive. In particular so around truffles time in October but then you better have the restaurant and hotel bookings set well ahead.
Another place popular with the Americans but quite nice actually is Le Cinque Terre just North of La Spezia on the West Coast.

And - apart from Assisi - very little visited, Umbria.
The little wine country around Montefalco close to Perugia is amazing.
And people just love having you coming there and tasting their wine and just hanging with them. Their Sagrantino, one of the best wines in Italy, is great value too. Italian of course comes in handy but isn't a must these days.
