You don't recall the gasoline lines of the 70s?

They weren't caused by a refusal to sell us oil.

I think McCain's hero designation is well deserved. It came about because he had a chance to be released less than a year after he was captured, because his father was a top admiral and the Vietnamese thought that releasing him would be good PR. But he refused, unless all others captured before him were also released. As a result he endured an extra five years of captivity and very brutal torture. He was near death a number of times during his captivity. His hair turned white while in captivity, and his injuries are apparent even today -- you can tell he is moving pretty stiffly.

Does anyone besides me find calling McCain a "hero" because he was a POW absurd?

Boy if he isn't a hero I don't know who would be. If the same thing happened today we sure would consider that person a hero. Look at how hard they tried to turn the dead football player into a hero - sorry I don't remember his name.

However being a hero has nothing to do with what kind of president one might be. Might even be a vague argument that he shouldn't be president. He is now running ads about his POW experience - and that I don't like that.

Absolutely not. When you go through hell serving your country and come out of it as a whole human being, you have reached a new status, no matter what your political affiliation.

I don't like some of McCain's policies, and sometimes his political tactics, but I would never disrespect the officer there.
