The whole South Carolina thing, i.e. Bill's Jesse Jackson dig, started when Obama put Bill's whole presidency in the same category with Nixon. I'm surprised Bill didn't go apoplectic. "I think that Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America in a way that, you know, Richard Nixon did not and in a way that Bill Clinton did not." But the funny thing was that Obama didn't retort right back by pointing out his win with white folks in Iowa. And neither did the media. Bill Clinton set himself right up for a real slam. I wondered at the time if halfway through that statement Bill wasn't thinking 'Uh oh... I sure wish I could suck these words right back in.'

I thinkit is more that the liberals just cannot stoop to the hideous tactics the conservatives will use e.g. when the neo cons used gay bashing to win Ohio and other states and probably the last election. Most americans are still bigots abotu gay marriage! Kerry was advised to disavow gay unions by James Carvelle. He refused to do it on moral grounds and so lost the election? To me that is the stand of a hero, not a dupe. Look at what the right wing did to Max Cleland and of course the swift boating, and all of Henry mellon scaifs vile tactics. We liberals are a bit more civilized than the right wing and it is hard for us to be bigots or merciless. Most of the country is against gay marriage and the right wing will use any vile tactic they can find. A man is not weak or stupid because he will not kick a person in the groin, or be a bigot.
