I would be against the US government intervening to try to greatly reduce American use of oil, but if your going to do it I wouldn't do it by subsidizing hybrids. I would put a tax on the oil and/or refined products, and let the market figure out how it will adjust to the higher prices, rather than having government pick some particular response and subsidize it.

Good point, though I think that a hybrid subsidy would be easier politically than a substantial increase in the gas tax.

My point remains though, this isnt an environmental or trade issue, it is a national security issue. I no longer want to provide Hugo Chavez, Putin, or the Iranian mullahs the cash they need to stay in power.
