I don't think its that much of a national security issue. AS much as we don't like Chavez, he isn't much of a threat to oil production except production in his own country. Russia is a much greater potential threat, but its a complex situation and a crash in the oil price might make things less stable and more dangerous. Iran might be a better example but even here it isn't certain.

There are certainly ways in which a lower price for oil could create a better security situation, but the case isn't simple and clear cut. Not severe, direct, or certain enough IMO to justify a heavy intervention in the market for oil or refined oil products.

ABC just reported that their exit polls showed that the single most important attribute to Democratic voters was "change". It came in with 52% with experience coming in 2nd and empathy in 3rd.

They arent giving the overall polling numbers yet, but the fact that change was the most important attribute certainly sounds good for Obama.

"Shared Values" was listed as the top attribute on the Republican side.

Slacker, a hybrid subsidy would just be a gift to the manufacturers of hybrids--they would just raise the price, IMHO.

I think hybrid rebates are a complete waste of time. If I gave a rebate, it would be to switch from heating oil to natural gas. It is a complete waste to be burning oil for heat, and then talk about funding gas-to-liquids projects.

I would gladly support a big tax on oil. But to sell it, simply reduce income taxes by an equivalent amount. But, you would need a president with some guts and half a brain, so that might be asking too much.
