I see it the other way around. If you are a cop you are probably smart enough to know to destroy all the possible evidence of criminal activity unless you plan to use it against others.

What could Clemens (and the other players) have to gain by ratting him out? It would be professional suicide.

If they ratted him out because they got caught, the evidence that he saved would just seal the deal that he was the source.

They all play with aches and pains, but later in their careers, they obviously tend to have way more problems (and more severe ones) because of the accumulation of strain on their bodies.

It's interesting that you say that HGH won't help without taking it daily for months. So either McNamee is lying about how often he gave to them (why the hell would he do that?) or there are very minor healing benefits from more casual use (which makes more sense when in light of the fact that Pettite was taking it when trying to recover from an injury).
IMHO, neither of these guys was looking for performance enhacement in the traditional sense of the word. They were looking to recover their best form, which they couldn't do because of chronic injury, soreness, pain etc...
