The obvious pivotal difference is that Germany and Japan don't rely on US troops for neighborhood security, nor have they for many decades.

McCain is still making the facile assumption that Iraqi security forces and politicians will magically transform themselves into competent, honest grownups who won't tear their country in half absent a foreign occupier to stop them.

It is a very big leap that a majority of Americans won't make, according to current polls. We'll see if McCain can sell the story in the fall campaign.

I don't like being in Germany or Japan either.

I don't want bases in the Muslim world. I think they would exacerbate the tensions. Leave them to their own devices. I'd rather spend the money here.
