Well, just a quick response to that small business owner.

First, no raise in the minimum would occur all at once, especially one that large. Even smaller increases are phased in over a period of years. Second, I am quite certain that Congress won't pass anything that large without exempting any number of businesses, including those who employ less than "xx" number people, taking care of a large number of small businesses right there. Third, it plausibly would put some businesses out of business--but that happens all the time as a consequence of free trade, with business moving to Asia, the Caribbean, central America etc., without the people who will undoubtedly oppose this increase (e.g., Nat'l Ass of Manufacturers, Chamber of Commerce, etc) uttering a peep other than, sorry, can't compete giving these wages and benefits.

I'm sure there's more, but don't have enough time right now to think of it.

Tim,

One of the constant characteristics of the left is that they have a presupposition of wealth and that taking that wealth for their causes will not change the wealth. It is constant in their arguments. It is a naive concept. I think Obama is very naive. Hillary on the other hand IMO knows better - but spouts the needed line to get elected. Which is worse?

A McCain Obama contest would be interesting. Perhaps a great strength of McCain is that he can state his positions without being construed as a mouth piece of the "great right wing conspiracy". He will have credibility.

Tim -

One of the things to remember about any President's desire to raise the minimum wage is that he or she doesn't have the power to do it, as you know.

The question is more one of what Congress will do when the President asks them to do this or that.
