The comparisons to Germany and Japan are completely bogus.

One of the problems with using examples, whether it's McCain on the stump or posters on an SI thread, is that there is not 100 percent compatibility between the example and the object. For some reason I have yet to figure out, some listeners ignore the point of commonality that the example was intended to illustrate and pick on the differences between the example and the object. as though that somehow obviated the truth of the point of commonality. I would give an example of this but surely someone would find fault with my example and go off on a tangent about it. <g>

There are a lot of differences between Germany and Iraq. They speak German in Germany, for example, and Arabic in Iraq. So what. The point is that countries can and do maintain a military presence in other countries for long periods of time. There is nothing shocking about that. If you don't like Germany and Japan, then look at the Philippines or Australia. Or the time the Brits were in India or Africa.

Looking at differences between the situations is useful in determining the utility and risk of us staying in Iraq, but it is not useful in judging whether McCain's statement is outrageous.
