There are several issues here worth discussing. But, for the moment, let's go back to the one which kicked this conversation off--a list of "promises" from one of Obama's rallies.

I take these to be an ongoing attempt on Obama's part to shift the political culture much the way Reagan did. One of the most successful part of the Reagan period, for which we are all paying many prices, was the mantra about tax cutting, without any attention to the costs. That created a political culture which paid no attention to the consequences; just cut taxes. And no attention to the differential effect of such cutting.

Obama's language on the stump pushes forward a different political culture in which attention is paid to the need to address critical issues such as healthcare, education, income inequality, and, just as central, the differential effects of the Bush/Reagan tax cut policies.

That's not false hope; it's an attempt to change the conversation. If you don't like that conversation, that's the other thing we can argue about.
