If anybody could possibly split Syria from Iran, it would be somebody with sticks as well as carrots to offer - it would be somebody who is currently in office.

It would never in a thousand years have occured to any candidate for President in 1944 to go overseas and try to make private negotiations with Mussolini - and he would have been reviled as a traitor by all sides if he had.

But then in 1944 America understood they were in a war. They understood that politics stops at the border.

Now half the country thinks the answer is singing Kumbaya with jihadis who want to kill us. And sees no problem with undermining the sitting President in any way they can.
