Good catch on the baleen. Now, they need to try and find some dead ones and extend the record back for several centuries. How does one know that the last 40 years has not been repeated rather regularly?

I still think they should be able to look at the seafloor muck and reconstruct plankton levels, using carbon dating. Further, by looking at isotope ratios, it should be correlated to atmospheric temps as well.
