And so what? Most of their "playing in the sandbox" has been a reaction to instability in the ME. The Brits invaded Iraq to overturn a pro-Nazi govt. The Iranian military was encouraged to overturn Mossadegh to keep him from turning the country into a Soviet client state. We are in Iraq because Saddam couldn't stop invading other countries and wouldn't cooperate with UNSC mandates. We're in Afghanistan because the Taliban allowed AQ to use their country as a base for attacks against us. Our interventions are a result of ME instability getting out of hand, not the cause of it.
