I suspect he uses it because that's the term the hate group on the right uses. The equivalent of "wing-nuts" or "RWEs" from the other side.

As I said to Bob, in my view it's much less about left-right stuff, than approaches to discussions about policy and politics.

And as I said to you, I agree. And from what I read in his post, he does, too. I think you are making too much of the unevenness of the examples and the tilt in the labels. It seems to me than more important is the acknowledgment that the phenomenon occurs on both sides. I disagree that it occurs across the spectrum, though. You get lunacy and hate only at the extremes. You get ignorance and stupidity, factors that he left out, across the spectrum.
