Ah, but I didn't say global warming was an existential threat. It is not promoted as an existential threat, whereas terrorism is.

Climatologists are warning that we may be reaching a tipping point, beyond which there may be consequences ranging from just disruptive to catastrophic.

I do realize that it's difficult to prove causality in a system that involves so many variables, such as the entire earth and its atmosphere. But there is widespread belief in the scientific community that human activities can and do contribute to global warming. Thus, it makes sense to try to do something about that. If we're helping to move the earth's climate toward a tipping point, it would make sense to stop it.
