"But the scientific community has gathered itself around a call for action based on (a) warning the population of the dangers, (b) trying to assign some time line probabilities to various scenarios, and (c) trying to propose a variety of actions. "

John - some of the scientific community has certainly done that. In the process they have demonized opposing opinion - that should raise the alarm right there. What we need is a good national debate on the subject. That is the primary reason I was for Fred Thompson - he would have had the guts to make an counter argument. If we had a good debate the populace could decide how to spend national financial resources.
