Lifers. I thought the same thing. I joined the army out of high school in 1966. Volunteered for a 2nd Vietnam tour to get out three months early in 1970. (Of course, I wasn't a trigger-puller. Electronic technician.) Hope I'm never that close to slavery again.

We called them treads, from the stripes on their sleeves. The joke was that, in the 1960s, when I served, most of us got stripes on our own sleeves pretty darned quickly. I made Staff Sergeant. Twice. And would have made it a third time if I had re-upped. Which was as likely as an Ayatollah being elected Pope. <G>
