We were in the Army at the same time. How many times did you hear: "In the old brown shoe Army..."? <G> It seemed that changing the dress shoes to black was a commie conspiracy that wrecked our fighting ability.

OT, re: lifers & getting out early.

Was in the SeaBees. Got sent to Vietnam Oct ’66 for a year shore duty. Had the option of extending there for 6 or 12 months (with 30 days free leave & a free ticket ANYWHERE in the free world). Same deal…get out 3 months early (if you had 3 months or less to serve). I just extended for the 6 months so that I wouldn’t have enough time left to be sent back. Some of my buddies took the full year extension. We were in a relative “safe” location…Chu Lai.

ps: we had one guy that took the 30 days basket leave in Tahiti
pps: they tried to get me to re-up...I told them I'd never keep a job that I couldn't tell my boss to go to hell & quit anytime I wanted!
