You are absolutely right. Not about the closed thread bit, because I just think it's incredibly weird how obsessed everyone here is by Dale and Center, but I am sorry that it came out as "looking down" to you- since it wasn't any sense of superiority that motivated me, but the sudden awareness as I drove through this incredible section of Texas between the two major cities of Dallas and Houston, of the extremes which occur in a matter of a few miles. From sophistication to authentic rural, and the fact that the elections are not as clearcut as Democrats are thinking.

In fact, having reread my original post, I am sort of surprised at how much you seem to have inferred. I wrote facts about what I saw on this trip, facts that reminded me of this different face of America, facts about bibs and cowboy hats and permanent flags flying. That some here immediately read that to be "looking down" actually says more about how THEY view it than how I did, making me wonder who really is doing the condescending. Or perhaps all that eagerness to "insult the horrible liberals" colors accurate comprehension. This was what it was. And if I was making fun of anyone, it was the urban superficiality of the temporary flag being flown, or the wearing of bibs or boots as fashion statement. It IS a different world. And I do believe their sense of America is different. I did not say better, I did not say wrong.

As a writer, I would definitely edit out big butts, though. Even if it was true. My butt isn't what it used to be. Glass house.

As for making fun of religion- not really, I was making fun of that billboard. As I said earlier, I find a lot of things funny and comment on them- and the format of the billboard with "No more porn, get reborn" written as a Bible quote with Jesus as the author, and a Bible verse under it- what can I say. Heck, maybe THEY were being funny, which would be very cool.
It still is funny to me. As is the picture of Old Sparky as a tourist attraction. Dark comedy.

Nope, I read and reread, and this is still what I saw...and I still see no labeling in that post that something is Bad or Wrong, merely that it is Different.

At a McD's on the way down (not a lot of culinary choices on this route), there were farmers in bib overalls- not the chic California ones, no, these are the real thing- there were cowboy hats and boots, there were stunningly huge butts on the women. This is a different world. These are people who have permanent flags decals on their trucks- not the cool small cotton ones we all had flying from our car windows after 9-11, and then replaced with our favorite sports team flag when they made it to the finals. These people have a different sense of America, I think. They love it passionately, they trust its symbols, they are disgusted by horrifying liberal moral and ethical decadence. Global anything is anathema.
