China’s killer chill

By donsurber on China

1.6 million frostbitten. 3.1 million may starve.

More than half the 5.2 million people who live in Qinghai province in northern China may starve as an extremely cold winter entered its sixth month, Xinhua news agency reported.

Already, 1.6 million people – 3 out of 10 – are frostbitten and snowblind, the news agency reported.

“Since October last year, consecutive low temperature had gripped the province. The temperature plunged to minus 36.3 degrees centigrade, the record lowest in January in the province, said the provincial meteorological bureau,” Xinhua reported. Celsius (centigrade) and Farenheit temperatures are about even as you get that low. (-40 degrees C is the same as -40 F).

With snow 3 inches to a foot deep across the plains, animals cannot forage. Officials said 500,000 livestock and wild animals are dead.

The numbers are mind-boggling. I should take a swipe at the global warming idiocy, but I am too numbed.
