Steve, after the world stops lending to us, interest rates will shoot up, which will, finally, reward the savers <g>

I agree with you that getting the lenders to reduce mortgage principal down to the value of the house seems to reward the profligate consumers among us, though that may not be necessarily so. In any case, there is no taxpayer money involved and the lenders come out ahead compared to foreclosure.
