I think there are a lot of kids who are eligible for SCHIP who are not enrolled. Many of the parents just are not sophisticated enough to realize that SCHIP is out there. I know because I've dealt with them.

First case involved a kid with a brain tumor. Mom racked up hundreds of thousands in medical bills and wanted to file bankruptcy. I called the hospital and they told me they would file a Medicaid claim for the child, who had zero income.

There is a time limit to do so, cannot keep it straight in my memory, 30 days comes to mind but that can't be right. 90? 180?

My own brother who died in 2006 from brain cancer qualified for Medicaid when it disabled him. He delayed treatment because he was Medicaid ineligible, even though he wasn't working, because he had too many toys (motorcycles, etc.) And there was denial, massive denial, too.

What we really need is more social workers who understand the system we already have. Hospitals have them, as it is in the best interest of the hospital to get paid.

It's very hard for an ordinary human being to understand all the ins and outs. The information is there but if you don't know to ask for it and don't know how to process it, you lose.
