"And I sure don't see a scorched earth campaign at work.

Then you're watching with a jaundiced eye.

When you strongly attack a fellow Democrat, especially one you know has a better than a 50% chance of winning the nomination, not on the issues but rather on his character and his ability to become a competent president, then that's a scorched earth campaign.

And please don't say that those attacks are on the issues. There's a marked difference between arguing that she is more qualified to become president and arguing that he is not qualified to become president. Obama understands that distinction but Hillary long ago crossed that line and now she's demolished it with ads suggesting that the nation's children would be endangered if he became president and the "red phone rang at 3 am."

There are numerous clips of her asserting that Obama is unqualified for the office. Those clips lie there awaiting cutting by McCain or, if he's too ethical to make that specious argument, the 527 Swift Boat groups that are lying in the weeds.

So now we can thank Clinton for her various themes of Obama the "black candidate," Obama the candidate on the Rezko take, Obama the "one speech to an anti war group" candidate, and Obama the candidate who, if elected, would endanger the lives of your children.

She even went so far as to compare him unfavorably to John McCain in terms of his ability to fill the office.

The fact that she follows it up with platitudes like "we'll all come together after the primary" or "this will make him a tougher candidate" is simply ludicrous.

What makes it even more reprehensible is that she's not only damaging Obama for a general election, she's killing her own chances in the event she somehow secures the nomination. Independents and moderates are not going to quickly forget the character flaws that rear their ugly heads when her back is against the wall.

I suspect that after George Bush the swing voters are sick of ends justify the means politicians, sick of politicians willing to demonize those who reasonably oppose their goals and sick and tired of politicians whose personal ambitions are the driving forces behind their quests for office.....and sick of Hillary Clinton.
