When the only success the cave dwellers have is hiding osama, putting resourced into his capture is a great investment, if not the most cost effective allocation of resources. One billion in chasing cave dwellers is far more cost effective than a trillion spent on guarding whatever always leaving the 99.99999% unguarded.

For a better understanding of why I don't think OBL is important to AQ, recommend reading chapters two and seven of the book the Starfish and The Spider. That can be accomplished in a few minutes in a Barnes and Noble.

Unlike a snake, you cannot kill these organizations by cutting off their head because most of them have no head, or the head is or becomes inconsequential.

For an understanding of the unstoppable power of flat leaderless organizations and certain hybrids (including a number of today's examples), read the entire book.

OBL facilitated the creation of AQ much like Bill W facilitated the creation of AA.

And just as AA now grows without Bill, or any other leadership (except local and in a loose knit cell-like structure), so does AQ.

And just as AA thrives world-wide without a conventional pyramidal leadership structure, AQ is succeeding in creating a similar structure.
