It started off as an investigation of his financial transactions after the banks notified the FBI. They thought he might be involved in corruption or something... that's the story anyway. Outright corruption doesn't really pay in the American system while in office. Ideally you leave office with a good reputation and then go to work as a consultant, board member etc. making a fortune showing everyone how to get ahead in the system. This Spitzer thing is just plain stupid, wiring money to shell companies to pay for prostitutes and then talking on the phone about it...
