Perhaps we should regard the article as an open resignation letter?

Barnett had built up a huge trust factor among our Flags. They felt they could be open with him. I am sure Thomas felt that he was doing Fallon a service and writing a laudatory article about him, but he went horribly wrong. Fallon was publicly offended from the day the article appeared, and really bad-mouthed what Barnett had done.

This has ruined Barnett's career. His whole position is built on the trust from the military. Now it is totally gone. No flag will ever talk to him again. No more military articles for Esquire. Forget about the book he is writing. His position with Enterra, which is built on getting government contracts, is ruined.

I expect he will end up as a Pol Sci Prof at the U of Indiana.
