The point about commodity prices not keeping up with inflation is over the very long run. For months, or years, or even a few decades they can be ahead of inflation.

I think Elroy made the statement as a near absolute (but only in the long run). I wouldn't be so absolute about it. I would however say that it is a general trend. OTOH if the commodities can do well for years or even a few decades than that is plenty of time for profits to be made. Its not like people have an investment horizon of centuries.
