Understanding something in terms of context is not "justifying"- it is simply "understanding" which simply means trying to comprehend why something is the way it is. People often seem to think trying to "understand" something is an attempt to justify it. I've never understood that. When learning about Nazi Germany I made every attempt to "understand" the German people- but my efforts had nothing to do with trying to justify or excuse what they did. I'm not sure why understanding and justification get confused so often.
