Means that he didn't want to fight Wright over this. Anyone who is a uniter between the black and white communities won't attack this head on. It's a belief system that lends itself more to a gradual rapprochement - and that seems to me what Obama is all about. As the old guard dies off, so will the memes- unless of course we try to tar Obama because of associations, and not because of his actual beliefs. Then (I'd guess) you strengthen that meme in the black community.

Why did Obama keep Wright as part of his campaign until now? It was quite predictable that the latter's hateful sermons (which were recorded and marketed) would become an issue.
