And read against...

Exactly. You're reading them against, which is what I said.

"...find Wright less offensive because he has a positive side where Duke has none. Again, that doesn't make Wright's outrageous pronouncements any less outrageous or damaging."

Wright may be a better person than Duke, but the STATEMENTS are in the same general class of odiousness. I won't give you an argument that Wright isn't the better person or that Wright hasn't said and done some wonderful things. I might even like the guy, unlike Duke, who is despicable. But that wasn't my point. I can read him "against" as well as you do. I can appreciate where he's coming from. But I can concurrently differentiate between judging him and judging those awful statements. And I can recognize the application of the halo effect when I see it.

The parallel is a political trick.

It may be used politically as a bludgeon or a trick by some of the people some of the time, but that doesn't mean that the essence of it is invalid. The blame should be on the usage.

I see them as exaggerations of some claims that are not that far off.

Back atcha. "Duke" is outrageous but Wright's exaggerations are "not that far off." Perspective? Hmmmmm.

I'll be happy to discuss specific statements of Wright's that bother you.

None of Wright's statements bothers me. None of it was new to me. I don't know any Duke sympathizers but some Wright sympathizers have been "uncles" of mine.
