>>My concern was centered more on the cost of protecting his family who were living in other countries.

They will undoubtedly become potential targets of US enemies and will need elaborate security details.<<

Patricia -

I doubt that the government will find it necessary to provide security details for family members around the world, any more than they do now.

I said that these questions sounded like xenophobia because of comments like those in the article or blog post you referred to, where the author spoke of distant relatives in places like China. The fact that a US President might be somehow related to people living in foreign countries is not a cause for alarm or concern, in my view.

To my knowledge, no security is provided for family members beyond the immediate family of the president. I don't see any reason that should change, irregardless of threats. If such threats occur, it is a private family matter for them to deal with in terms of protection. Extended family members of Presidents have traveled the world and managed to do so safely. Why should it be different if they live elsewhere? I simply found an interest in extended family rather odd. Bush II has two rather miscreant brothers who are not spoken of nor seen (and made personal fortunes off their name, not a few dollars for giving an interview). And there was Billy Carter, the raskol bro of Jimmy.(who cashed in by selling Billy Beer).
I think the biggest potential threat to America from a family member might have been that ballet dancing son of Ronny's, tho. (sorry, couldn't resist that)

I consider Obama's extended family is irrelevant. As is McCain's. And Hillary's.

<<<What will happen if he becomes President >>>

That is not a problem if he becomes President.

The problem is that people who will use this type of information to prevent him from being President.

The problem is big and ugly and we will tend to ignore the problem, as if it were beneath us to address it.

We will kill the messenger and let the culprits get away.
