I am not sure I understand your question. But courage would have been making that statement sometime in the past, like after the 9/11 comments. Leadership would have been advising his spiritual leader that his comments were damaging another generation and that he was not going to stand for it. Judgement would have been to realize that by being passive he was condoning the message. His comments are fine in that paragraph. Comparing his grandmothers behaviour and judging all white people of a generation is not.
