First, such things are usually kept secret as you yourself said so the customers don't know about it.

Correct, but if you heard from another person that your favorite dentist of 10-20 years had referred to someone in a racially insensitive way, would you then never go to that dentist again? This is essentially what is being demanded of Obama.

Wright however shouted his hate speech from the pulpit and his congregation loved him for it. The congregations enthusiastic reaction shows the message they were hearing was expected and welcome, not something unusual.

Do you have any idea what % of Wright's sermon time over his 20 year career was what you'd call hate speech versus the normal religious education and worship? I don't. Obama has indicated for him it was more along the lines of normal church sermons, with the occassional disagreeable remark thrown in here and there, that the offensive stuff was more of an anomoly than the norm. You have data to indicate otherwise? I would think that every preacher that espouses political belief from the pulpit has offended some of his flock, and the flock in general don't leave the church unless the preacher is extreme about politics.

I have no data, but I'm fully aware that anyone who has spoken publicly from notes and without a prepared manuscript for over 20,000 hours has delivered 15 minutes of ridiculously stupid and/or offensive speech. I've written loads of stuff on SI, and I'm pretty sure you can find 5 or 6 sentences that you can string together, claim they represent "me", and I will look like Satan.

I wouldn't care if the political views are conventional. But "God damn America" and sadistically crowing "America's chickens have come home to roost" the Sunday after 911 is NOT conventional. Hell yeah, I would walk away from this church. So would most people. Because this "political message" is so extreme and hateful it offends common decency.

I'd imagine some members of the church that were in attendance that day did walk away and find another place of worship. Others decided this one outburst did not outweigh years and years of what has probably been an extremely rewarding relationship for them, one which is not summed up in 10 minutes of cut and paste video created by the enemies of Barack Obama.

Do you honestly think every single member of that church is a pig as a result taking 20,000 hours of unrehearsed public speaking, and choosing the most offensive 15 minutes, and editing them together? Do you think you could speak 5,000 different times for an hour, with a subject but no script, and not generate 10 minutes of offensive crap? Good luck.

George Bush has plenty of edited montages of him screwing up the English language. Does this mean he is a complete idiot, and we are idiots for electing him? No. It means in unscripted public speaking there is always the possibility to make an ass or a fool of yourself. And anyone who speaks for the amount of hours that this guy Wright has spoken without a script, is going to produce offensive and stupid material. Bob Hope couldn't speak unrehearsed for 20,000 hours and not offend half the country at some point in some way. :-)

I believe Obama's statement's about Wright as the guy who spent most of his time in spiritual discussion and occassionally (it sounds like seldomly, but occassionally) went off the deep end on politics.

And it seems the same to me as your barber who hates marines or your doctor who hates gays - it doesn't mean that you are a jerk because you use them to cut your hair and to get a check up. Guilt by association is a weak attack in a land of individuals.
