Buddhists weren't really doing the same thing- there is no absolute creator God with whom to commune. Some Buddhist believe in the absolute consciousness of the Buddha, but that's not universal, and it's not really like Western religions.

But I agree with you that the way humans are wired means they relate to their deities in similar fashions- although some people do practice things like ancestor worship and ancestor eating, throwing virgins to volcanoes, and other fascinating rituals to satisfy or commune with the Gods. So I'm not sure religions are really as similar as you suggest. Christianity is kind of a death cult religion- where you gain from a ritual killing. This guy (Christ) dies, so I can live- and in some cases, we eat the flesh of the victim! Oh boy! As such I find it much like the pagan death cult religions. There's nothing per se wrong with death cult religions, but I'm not very attracted to them.
