I both agree and disagree.

Reading about an era in a book, watching films, studying others' writings, having it told to you is indirect experience.

On the other hand-----

Someone who was born in the 1920's or before as well as forward in time to being a teenager or in their 20's during the 1960's has direct experience of the era.

They have a level of understanding about the 1960's that others born later or as Obama was at the beginning of the 1960's cannot bring to understanding as they have not experienced it directly.

You don't have to live though the 60's to read about and understand them.

I lived through them and never did understand them, even then.
