n 54 the Supreme Court declared the integration of our schools illegal.

Whoops. I meant the segregation of our schools.

In 73 Nixon eliminated the draft. That eliminated (or nearly eliminated) the community equalizing power of our armed forces.

Since the number of people who can join the military is limited, wouldn't the draft - by filling up the ranks - in fact decrease the opportunities for some youngsters who would WANT to serve to do so?

I know that you have given this serious thought, UW - that's why I'm asking.

You put your money and your effort where your mouth is, and most people don't do that. I'm not as active as you. My effort is much more passive, but in my own way I try to narrow the gulf.

I'll have to think about what you said on the draft being an equalizer. I rather like the volunteer military, and it seems as though we get better results with it. Also, I sort of bristle at the idea of using the military as a social experiment. But who am I to say?

When I was growing up, the only other kid who went to Boy Scout Camp with me was a black kid. We slept in the same tent and stepped in each other's cook kits. There weren't that many black kids around then, and I couldn't see what the big problem was.

My Dad was a Southern man, but he never taught me one word of prejudice. His only thought was maybe you couldn't change people as fast as you wanted to, sort of like your long time line of events.

In a way, I think the best thing most people can do is to avoid being part of the problem. A few, like yourself, try to actively fix it. That isn't possible for most people.

I consider Nixon's decision the monstrous Republican error of my lifetime.

I agree with you, but the problem with the draft was that it was unfair: not everyone had to go.

I would like to see a 2 year draft for every person, male and female, at age 18. Many, but not all of them, would serve in our armed forces. The rest could serve in other departments of our federal government. It would reap marvelous benefits for our youngsters and our Nation. All IMO.

When Nixon eliminated the draft, the flag burners won and the hate America crowd have been growing their numbers ever since. Military service is the driving force for nationalism and patriotism.
