Taxes are also a necessary evil. But unless they approach 100% I don't consider them as much an evil as the draft. To the extent that you pay draftees less than what it would take to get that many people to sign up if you had an all volunteer military, you are effectively taxing them that much (plus the amount they actually pay in taxes), but your also forcing them in to one particular, and often highly demanding job. It may be necessary, it may produce some good results, but there is always something wrong about it.
