That would have been a bit extreme. Also I'm not sure if it even could have been done. Generally anyone can join a political party. I suppose some really small ones might control membership lists but the Republican Party, and the Democratic party are pretty much open to anyone, or at least any eligible voter.

The Republicans could have publicly snubbed the Dixiecrats, but I don't think they could have actually prevented them from switching parties, and I'm not sure making a big show of snubbing them would have been a good idea either.
