The south was quite solidly Democratic until the Civil Rights Act was passed. White voters, perhaps those southern NASCAR fans you were looking at, started to trend away from the Democratic Party in 1964.

I was just providing some objective historical background for the "Red State " south.

Yes, and I'll concede to you on the point of being fooled. I'm not blue collar but did vote for Reagan twice and consider myself as having been fooled to some extent.

What I was responding to was a common tendency among well educated folk to view the less educated as stupid. They're not, of course, and certainly have enough education to make an informed vote, IMO.

It may be more a matter of priorities when looking at how blue collar voters and less than college-educated voters reach their decision.
