That's ridiculous to post numbers from the 60's. They don't mean anything in today's dollars. The reason why everything is more expensive today is because we have this nagging little thing called inflation. $1 back then was worth a hell of a lot more than $1 today.

The CPI (1982-1984 base period) for 1967 is 33.4. The most recent CPI for February 2007 is 211.693. data.bls.gov Thus the 1967 tuition (approximately the middle of the period) of $1500 to $1900 is in current dollars $9507 to $12042. The actual tuition at Wellesley today is $32,384. wellesley.edu Well I don't know if this helps us with the question of the economic status of Hillary's parents, but what it does show is that tuition at Wellesley College went up a lot more than inflation. This is typical of college tuition in general and is, in fact, typical of any labor intensive activity, e.g., education and health care.
