Bobs, Numonyx hasn't exactly given up.

It can ramp Wuxi at least further for NAND. It's a flexible and relative low cost investment so this could happen first. Numonyx (like Spansion) uses NAND in single/multi chip bundles with NOR.

Their Catania fab is going to be mixed technology. FG NAND is easier to ramp than FG NOR so that's why they are taking this route. It might also allow them to sell their share in Wuxi if needed.
The drawback for them of starting with NAND is that they need two separate equipment/production ramps. One for NAND and one for NOR. In Wuxi they probably relied at least partially on Hynix. Also when fully equiped the mix isn't that easy to change either. Spansion has only one technology to do both NOR and NAND so they don't have to bother with the differences.
